Smedjen is the conversion of a former industrial building in rural Denmark into a family home, one of a number of Danish renovation projects I worked on during 2017-18 in collaboration with Novaform Arkitekterne. The concept design of the ground floor is inspired by traditional Danish farmhouses—for example the entrée includes a bryggers and toilet before entering the family rooms on the ground floor. The kitchen and sitting area is laid out open plan around the large former smelting chimney which is retained for a contemporary woodburner. The first floor sitting room includes storage under the eaves and a family bathroom; and on the second floor mezzanine a bedroom accessed via a iron spiral staircase. A key aim of the project was to retain the historic details where possible to maintain the character of the building, which was carried through each stage of the design process.
